Irish bishop Noel Treanor has been named as the Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union.
In a statement released by the Vatican today, it said:
“The Holy Father appointed His Excellency Most Reverend Bishop Noël Treanor, hitherto Bishop of Down and Connor, as Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union, raising him at the same time to the dignity of Archbishop.
H.E. Msgr. Noël Treanor was born in Silverstream, Ireland, on December 25, 1950.
He was ordained a priest on June 13, 1976, incardinating in the Diocese of Clogher.
He obtained a Licentiate in Theology.
On March 31, 1993, he was appointed Secretary General of the Brussels-based Commission of Episcopal Conferences of the European Community (COMECE).
On February 22, 2008, he was appointed Bishop of Down and Connor and was consecrated the following June 29.
