France has been the European home of anti Catholicism during the past decade, with beheadings and arson attacks becoming regular occurrences across the church’s eldest daughter.
Now, another attack has taken place, this time at Boulogne sur Mer’s Notre Dame Basilica.
The police described the scene as one where they found a man ‘covered in blood in a moment of madness’.
The Mayor wrote on Facebook:
I went there alongside the teams of the national police, the dean of the cathedral, Father Duminy, and the heritage services of the city to assess the consequences of this act of vandalism which is, a priori, not of a protest order but which seems to be the result of a gesture of insanity
The church belongs to both the state and the church, per the French Republic’s ownership rules, so both Mayor and Dean will be involved in repairing the damage that was done to it during this assault.
Details of the attacker are sparse, but we know that he was in his thirties and is believed to be an American citizen.
