If it is okay to euthanize innocent fellow citizens,
why is it not okay to kill people for other causes?
We are inundated with reports of the ongoing tragedy in Gaza and Israel.
There are many aggressive pro-Palestinian demonstrations world-wide and the one planned for Armistice Day in London — Saturday 11# November a.k.a. Remembrance Day — is in the news.
Many Irish volunteers fell in both World Wars and Remembrance Day is a memorial for the fallen Canadian soldiers also.
Thankfully there is shock in Britain at the idea of people wanting to eradicate a whole nation: “from the river to the sea.”
Also, there is revulsion at the disrespect being shown to Veterans and what Armistice Day represents.
(Some say all war is immoral, but most consider the World Wars to be ‘just’ wars for the Allies.)
The Death Penalty vs. Euthanasia
An easy moral comparison is euthanasia with capital punishment. If we are being morally consistent, when we bar the death penalty we should also bar ‘Voluntary’ Euthanasia for all the same reasons. (vice versa.)
Jihad vs. Euthanasia
A more stark comparison is with Islamic Jihad.
On October 7#, Hamas brutally restarted the Jihad against innocent Israelis — Muslim and Jewish Israelis alike. According to the Hamas 1988 Covenant, once they have eradicated the Jews in Israel (& then worldwide) they will come after the “pro-Zionist” countries. That means most every western country, including Ireland. This should be obvious when we see the current anti-Semitic, anti-Western, pro-Palestine protests in our countries.
Assisted Suicide / Euthanasia
There are several proposals to introduce assisted suicide and/or ‘voluntary’ euthanasia into the [geographic] British Isles — namely Ireland, Jersey, Mann, Scotland & England/Wales.
[Note: The Republic of Ireland, the Bailiwick of Jersey and the Isle of Man are not British territories.]
The pivotal question, is whether a society can kill their own innocent citizens — even if those citizens volunteer to be killed — while denying Jihadists their “right” to kill those whom they perceive to be an enemy and a mortal threat?
Surely, if a society has no fixed points of Right and Wrong with their own people, they cannot have the moral authority to limit others from their truth? Their morality? Their beliefs?
The outrage over the planned demonstration on Armistice Day gives me the hope that there is still a sense of morality in Britain. I hope this is evident during the public and parliamentary debates on Assisted Suicide / Euthanasia — not just in England & Wales, but also in Ireland, Scotland, Jersey, and the Isle of Man.
