Pope Francis met with Cardinal Joseph Zen in Rome this week.
He was given temporary permission to leave Hong Kong after his show trial by Communist authorities, so that he could attend the funeral of Pope Benedict XVI.
Zen has had a history of criticism towards the Vatican in recent years, saying in 2018 that the Vatican had ‘sold out’ after the signing of the controversial deal with the Chinese Communist Party.
In 2020, Cardinal Zen travelled to Rome to meet with Pope Francis but was unable to do so.
Both of these drew serious criticisms from Catholics across the world, which only intensified after Cardinal Zen was placed on show trial this year.
Now, images have emerged of Pope Francis meeting with Cardinal Zen at the funeral of Pope Benedict XVI.
