Possible reprieve for the mentally ill in Canada

In Canada, voluntary euthanasia / Medical Assistance in Dying (“MAiD”) was due to expand to include those with mental illness as a sole underlying condition, as of 17th March 2024.

The federal Minister of Health, Mark Holland just announced that: …Canada is "not ready" to expand eligibility for medical assistance in dying (MAiD) to people with mental health as their sole medical condition, today.

Holland said the government agrees with a joint parliamentary committee report released earlier Monday that reached the same conclusion, and that assisted death should only be offered to such patients when it can be "safely and adequately provided."

The introduction of MAiD for Mental Illness was postponed once from 2023 and Holland is not saying how long they plan to postpone this time round.

This is a glimmer of hope that the progression of euthanasia in Canada is slowing.
