Pope Says He Was 'Used' In Effort Block Ratzinger's Election

Pope Francis has given some unusual insights in an upcoming book entitled ‘El Sucesor’.

In excerpts from the book, published by CNA and reproduced on the US Bishops site, Francis spoke candidly about the 2005 conclave.

In it, he is quoted as saying:

  • He voted for Pope Benedict XVI in the conclave

  • That his pontificate wasn’t possible if he had been elected before Benedict as a ‘transitional’ papacy was needed

  • Cardinals used him to try to stop Benedict from being elected

  • Benedict XVI had resistance in the Vatican

  • He would not have accepted election in 2005 if he had been voted in

The Spanish book ‘El Sucesor’ is released this coming Wednesday. No date in English has been set yet.
