Catholics, despite our numbers, have become accustomed to feeling far more outside the popular culture than had once been the case when we were the ones who defined it.
So it is a welcome piece of news to see a Catholic intellectual recognised with a Nobel Prize.
2023’s Nobel Prize for Literature has been awarded to Norwegian author and dramatist Jon Olav Fosse.
Fosse converted to Catholicism 10 years ago, at the same time that he gave up alcohol, which had had a negative effect upon his life.
His work Septology is imbued with layers off his own life and deals with issues of faith, addiction and hope.
Congratulations to Fosse, may the next 10 years bring him more faith, joy and prosperity.
