Pope Francis has been subject to a complaint to the United Nations over a personal authorisation of a wiretap.
Raffaele Mincione is accused of corruption and of defrauding the Vatican in a property deal.
His barrister has claimed that Pope Francis personally authorised for Mincione’s phone to be tapped during this investigative process.
They claimed that Pope Francis violated the man’s human rights, saying:
"This unreasoned authorisation to prosecutors by an absolute monarch greenlit the undertaking of surveillance without the articulation of definite reasons, ongoing judicial or other independent and impartial supervision, or a mechanism by which to challenge the implementation of the surveillance before an independent and impartial tribunal."
