The United States has a dark history of anti Catholicism, but no one could have predicted the turn of events since 2020.
That summer, riots gripped the country as opposition to President Donald Trump, racial tensions and Covid restrictions created a perfect temperature for widespread violence.
For some strange reason, much of that violence became targeted against Catholics.
There was the hyena like tearing down of Catholic statues such as those of Junipero Serra and Christopher Columbus, there were arson attacks on Catholic places of worship and there was the open allowance of threats against Catholic public figures such as Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Comey Barrett.
In a new report by Catholic Vote, the frightening scale of these attacks was laid bare.
The write:
Since civil unrest began on May 28, 2020, there have been at least 275 attacks against Catholic churches in the United States, including arson attacks which damaged or destroyed historic churches; spray-painting and graffiti of satanic messages; rocks and bricks thrown through windows; and statues destroyed (often with heads cut off). A new spate of at least 118 attacks has occurred since the draft Supreme Court opinion proposing to reverse Roe v. Wade was leaked in early May 2022, with many including graffiti with pro-abortion messages. Crucially, while a handful of the attacks have included thefts, the vast majority have only involved property destruction, indicating that the primary motive is not material gain.
Their report also includes a map showing the extent of the geographical spread, not limited to liberal hotbeds, although California and New York do have the highest individual numbers per state.
The sad irony is that this has all occurred with a silent, Mass going Catholic sitting in the White House, who has remained unwilling to speak up against what is happening to the church in the country that he rules.
